How to Repair Water Demage on Your Cieling

September 24th, 2009constructions, tipsHow to repair falling or water damaged popcorn ceilings on your own. This operation requires a few tools that you may want to rent instead of buy if you do not have. Scrape prime and paint whole are or blend in as close as possible. In kitchen or smoking rooms whole area refinish is recommended.
1. We need to move any furniture, spread drop cloths, and mask area. Mask well because this stuff goes everywhere.
2. Now mark square area around bad spot, we want to cut against ceiling joists and add new wood to joists to hang drywall on. If drywall is not damaged skip steps 2 and 3, no need to cut out if rock is in good shape.
3. Now measure hole and cut sheetrock about 1/8″ smaller around than hole. This is important so you dont have a large tape joint and drywall will fit easy.
4. Now we need our garden sprayer and a scraper or puttyknife. Add hot water to sprayer, spray entire cieling. Now start spraying about 5′ squares and scrape texture lightly. No need to dig in just knock down bumpy spots. You may be fortunate and it come down in small sheets without much effort.
5. Now add joint compound (I prefer US Gypsum Brand but whatever is fine) to drywall mud pan. With 4″ or 6″ putty knife put a deep bed of join compound or “mud” around patch. Now add tape( preferably fiberglass mesh repair tape) and with 6″ knife lightly add thin layer of sheetrock mud.
6. Lets let this dry overnight. Adding a de-hudifier and a heater to room is a great idea if you have them.
7. Now we want to sand around patch if one was made and any high or rogh spots. Popcorn texture hides many imperfections so do not get carried away sanding, it does not need to be perfect.
8. Now lets use a paint roller with a thick knap roller and a handle and prime entire cieling. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP IN KITCHENS OR SMOKING ROOMS OR YOU WILL HAVE BLEED THROUGH!!! I prefer Zinser or Sherwin Williams OIL BASED stain blocker/primer. Let dry recommended time. If ceilings are to be tinted have paint store tint primer and you may not have to paint.
9. Now take a clean 5 gallon bucket and mix your texture to about a mud texture. Now add remaining primer or enough to tint to right color and make texture stick. Consistency should be pourable but not really wet.
10. Now turn on compressor and hook up to hopper. Hopper should be clean and desired tip installed. It should also have an air shutoff at line connection.
11. Keeping hopper upright, fill 3/4 way up with mixture, this operation of spraying needs to go quick so mixture will not set up. Spray from corner to corner using a front to back motion slightly shaking hopper while spraying. Do the entire ceiling stopping only to refill hopper, if it gets an airpocket and is just spiting shake well and mixture should drop into position.
12. When finished immediately take mixed bucket and hopper(with air still on) to your outdoor cleanup spot. Wash both thoroughly with water and then actually blow water through hopper till it comes out clean. You may want to dry it out and add some mineral spirits to blow through and lube everything inside. Now you can put up hopper, hose, and compressor.
13. Now remove masking and plastic ASAP. if you had a little bleedthrough just wipe it down with a rag. It should come right off walls or whatever. Wrap everything in dropcloths and take outside to clean/dispose of trash. Then go inside and enjoy your beautiful new ceiling.

Hi guys,
I know this might be a bit off topic but seeing that a bunch of you own websites, where would the best place be to host. Someone recommended I use Blue Host for $6.95 a month which seems like a great deal. Anyone here on http://www.lapistamerida.com using them?
